Introducing the Illinois Data Science Initiative

We are pleased to announce that the campus is undertaking a new effort – the Illinois Data Science Initiative (iDSI) – to explore how to better connect our faculty, staff, and students from nearly every discipline across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to the Data Science skills, tools, and practitioners that they need to solve their problems. In its first year, iDSI is focusing on identifying challenges, opportunities, and potential collaborations through a series of campus-wide summits centered on core research themes. This work is intended to form the basis for a sustained effort serving the data science needs of the Illinois research community and its educational, governmental, and industrial partners.

The iDSI steering committee is comprised of representatives from across campus who are working to ensure we have cross-domain input. It is being co-chaired by Prof. Robert Brunner and Prof. Bill Gropp, and supported administratively within NCSA.

All members of the university community are invited to participate in this initiative. Members of the community can get involved through the following options:

  • Join the iDSI email list to be notified of upcoming activities and involvement opportunities.
  • Plan to attend an iDSI hosted summit meeting that will connect researchers in a range of domains with interests in Data Science applications. Dates will be announced soon, so sign up to be notified of event details. Topics may include:
    • Food, Energy, and Water,
    • Business & Public Policy,
    • Health Analytics,
    • Education & Society,
    • Social Media Analytics, and
    • Data Fundamentals
